Tharu are the original inhabitants of the Terai region in Nepal. Their culture is an old and rich history based on their religion and live in the jungle.

Dauw means mother in tharu language. Tharu Dauw Women Skill Development Project was established to preserve the unique arts and crafts of the local surrounding.

There are sixteen Tharu women working to manufacture the local goods which have gained popularity in the local and international markets.

In the corporation of Femi Foundation and the dutch design studio Celia Suzanne Sluijter, Tharu Dauw is stepping ahead offering creative jobs for the local women who are able to earn for their family. Nepal has a lot to offer and most is still unknown.

During their internship for the dutch design studio the french designers Diane Du Chaxel and Marie Da Cruz worked in Nepal with Tharu Dauw on new collection.

REGULATIONS CELIA SUZANNE SLUIJTER

1 : agreement on proposal and conformation

These regulations are valid for all agreements between the producer and the designers.

The agreement is only legal in written form. Designers and producers work with a written agreement.
Offers/Proposals are valid for two months. Prices can differ due to unexpected changes during production.

When a producer wants to work with an other designer on the same product or design he should inform the designer. If the producer worked with others before on the same thing he should also inform the designer.

2: following the agreement

The designer will try to work towards a best possible product.
The producer will inform the designer about all possibilities and non possibilities in time.
Designs can not be multiplied or shown in public or shown to third extern person without a special specific agreement on this between the producer and the designer.
Delivery of goods and designs is followed as agreed in the contract or agreement.

3: property rights of design

Unless agreed differently all intellectual rights connected to the design will always stay the legal property of the designer.
Before the start of production a prototype should always be checked by the designer. Without a final positive agreement from the designer designs can not be produced. This agreement should be in written form.

Not written out and agreed on changes in the design should always be discussed with the designer, also after the producer took over all legal rights.

A producer can never make any changes in any design without asking the designers permission in written form.
Unless differently agreed all rights on models, drawings, files etc., will stay legal property of the designer.

A designer can stop production with a producer when the producer is
- not following the agreements
- not reacting for 3 months on written request

4: Use and licence

When a producer is keeping all agreements as negotiated in the written and signed agreement the producer will keep the exclusive right to use the design as agreed on.
Producer and designer will not show the product without the name of the producer or the designer. The designer has the right to use the product for personal promotion or publication in Europe.

The producer nor the designer have the right to use the design/product for any promotion or publication within Nepal without an agreement in written form.

5: Fee and payment

All rights and duties will be followed by the producer and designer as agreed in the contract from the moment of signature.
Cost of prototyping for design are for the producer unless differently agreed on.
The designer has the right when she has reasonable doubt to ask for insight in the bookkeeping of the producer regarding her design-fee.

6: Stop and breaking the agreement

When a producers stops the co-operation before presentation/sales he should pay for the costs made by the designer so far.
When a designer stops the co-operation she/he should pay all costs made by the producers so far.
In case a co-operation for whatever reason is stopped the producer has no rights ANYMORE to use the designs in any way. Unless differently agreed on in a written and signed contract. All rights in this case can only go to the producers from the moment the agreed payment is received by the designer. Proven by a bank conformation.

7: Responsibility

The designer never accepts any responsibility for any cost after total finishing of the agreement.

THARU DAUW displayed during the Dutch design week in Eindhoven, Holland.

Strijpspeelt was a place only for children during the fair...and Tharu Dauw was there....with Nepali puppet, Charaa, Fulawa and slinger...

We had a lot of fun and work but all was fine...
